mouth guardIt's spring: college basketball, professional baseball and school competitive sports - which means we see a lot of sports-related mouth and tooth injuries. When kids - even young ones - play contact games like baseball, football or soccer, they need to protect their teeth. Smaller kids benefit from inexpensive "boil and bite" mouth guards (available in any sports store). Older (high school) kids should have a mouth guard custom made (in a variety of colors) in a dental office. They are not expensive and are invaluable tools because they protect and save teeth from traumatic injury. Give us a call if you have any questions!

chewing gumIf you're looking for a "tooth friendly" gum, check out sugarless chewing gums sweetened with xylitol (zi-lo-toll). Xylitol is a non-fermentable sugar alcohol that apparently helps to remineralize - and strengthen - tooth enamel before cavities can form.

Xylitol has other benefits, too. Recent studies show that xylitol has a plaque-reducing effect. And for people with "dry mouth," chewing gum sweetened with xylitol helps stimulate the salivary glands, helping to "wet the whistle," so to speak.

For the best results, gum containing xylitol should be chewed for at least 5 minutes 5 times a day.
