The past few days have been very hot and muggy. When the temperature and humidity go up, make sure you're getting enough water to stay hydrated.
Our bodies need water to survive. Water regulates our temperature, removes waste and lubricates joints. We lose water all the time. If we don't replace the water, we can become dehydrated - and that's not good. In warm weather, sweat cools off our skin. But when it's humid, sweat takes longer to evaporate from the skin because the air already contains a lot of water. So the body tries to cool itself by sweating even more. If you do not replenish the water that your body loses, you will become dehydrated.
How much water do you need each day? Somewhere around 8, 8-oz. glasses of water should be ok, but you may need more depending on your body, level of activity and weather conditions. And note: we're talking WATER, not soda or "energy" drinks, and not caffeinated drinks (caffeine is a diuretic, which means you're losing even more hydration).
Stay safe - stay hydrated!
If you use sunscreen, good for you! You should also apply lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 because lips can be just as easily burned. Need some lip balm? Stop by the office and pick up one of our free lip balms in spearmint or vanilla mint flavors!
Happy National Chocolate Chip Day! Ruth Graves Wakefield created the original chocolate chip cookie at her Toll House Inn in Whitman, Mass., in the 1930's. Chocolate chips are the star ingredient in the perfect food: the chocolate chip cookie. Chowing down all day on chocolate chip cookies or any kind of sweets is not a good idea; sugars break down tooth enamel and cause tooth decay. But as an every-so-often treat? Go for it ... Chip, Chip - Hooray!!
Play contact sports? Wear a mouthguard! A properly fitted mouthguard helps prevent broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw. It will stay in place while you wear it, making it easy for you to talk and breath. It can be "boil and bite" or custom-made; ask us which kind is best for you!
Tuesday Tip for May 1, 2012: Flossing - Just Do It!
Thick or thin, minty or waxy, ribbon or string. It doesn't matter what type of dental floss you use. As long as you floss once a day, you're getting rid of the damaging plaque between your teeth that your toothbrush can't reach.
Pick your favorite brand, pick your favorite type, or stop in at the office and we'll give you some.
